JESSE
âYou okay?â I observe River touching the scar on her forehead. Weâve just come back from the clinic.
She nods.
Apart from thanking me for taking her to Dr. Maxwell, and thanking the doctor for removing her stitches, she hasnât said much.
âWould you like some tea?â I canât believe I have a box of that pussy-flavored drink in my pantry. Apparently itâs peppermint, and River said it had a calming effect when she tried it at Caroâs place the other day. Perhaps today it might be my ally to help me lift her mood; something is clearly bothering her.
âNo, thanks.â
âWhat are you thinking, River?â
She paces the kitchen, looking at anything other than me. Then she settles herself at one of the breakfast stools. âJesse, if my dad died in that house in Thunder Hill, and I had been there. I think I will remember.â She straightens herself and looks into my eyes. âPlease take me there.â
I know sheâll ask for this eventually, but itâs too soon. âThose bad guys will be watching the house, now that they know I was there,â I explain.
âThey know Iâm not dead. So wherever I am, at some point in time, sooner rather than later Iâm sure, they will come and get meâwhether I go to Thunder Hill or not.â
I shake my head.
âFine.â She grits her teeth and turns away from me. âIâll go there with or without you.â
I cock my head, trying to figure out where her annoyance came from. âDo you even remember how to drive?â
âWatch me!â She strides to the living room.
Mood swingsâsomething that Iâve forgotten about, and will never understand. Perhaps thatâs why I never last more than a few months with a girl before. I shouldâve insisted that she have that tea.
She stops at the wall key hooks by the door, snatching the truck keys.
I palm her hand. Mood swings or not, I care about her, and I do want to help her find closure. âAlright! Iâll take you there.â
âFinally!â she cheers sarcastically.
I pull her away from the key hooks, clutching her hand. âBut you will listen to every word I say.â
As she tries to withdraw from my hold, she eyeballs me, as if saying thatâs ridiculous.
Sheâs being hardheaded, so Iâm fighting her with my own stubbornness. I square my shoulders. âYouâll listen to every letter, every full stop and comma I say to you, okay?â
Knowing my decision will depend on her answer, she reluctantly agrees. âFine.â
âIf I tell you to run, youâll run. If I tell you to hide, youâll hide.â
âI said fine!â
âIf I tell you to leave me, youâll leave me.â
âWhat the hell, Jesse!â
âI wonât take you there if you donât say yes.â
âNo!â She escapes me and this time she manages to pull the keys off the hook. âWhat if youâre dying? I wonât leave you like that!â
I catch her hand. âEspecially if Iâm dying.â
A look of horror paints her face. She quavers, âI canât, and I wonât, Jesse.â
âThen we stay.â
She growls, this time like a man. Maybe she has learned it from me.
